2025 Retrospective of the Bridge Watch Project

In 2025, the Jean Monnet Network Policy Debate BRIDGE Watch Project reinforced its mission of building bridges between Latin America and Europe through activities, events, and strategic partnerships. Here are the main highlights of the year:

Events

IX Jean Monnet Network Seminar (April, Universidad del Salvador, Buenos Aires, Argentina): with 220 participants (in-person and online) and 56 speakers from 13 countries, focusing on the theme “Human Rights, Dignity, and Equality: A Dialogue between Latin America and Europe.”

X Jean Monnet Network Seminar (September/October, University of Chile and the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean, Santiago, Chile): over 150 participants (in person and online) and 120 speakers from 19 countries gathered to discuss “Digital Transformation and Innovative Solutions.”

Calls and Awards

IX Jean Monnet Network Workshop (April, Argentina): 22 papers were presented on the theme “Human Rights, Dignity, and Equality: A Dialogue between Latin America and Europe,” with a special highlight on the award-winning paper by José Humberto Sahián (Spain), titled “Convencionalización del derecho privado y privatización del derecho de los derechos humanos: un desafío futuro para la protección cabal de los derechos humanos.”

X Jean Monnet Network Workshop (October, Chile): the workshop was organized into 16 parallel panels and featured the presentation of 60 papers on the theme “Digital Transformation and Innovative Solutions.” Milena da Fonseca Azevedo (Brazil) received the Jean Monnet BRIDGE Watch Scientific Merit Award for her paper titled “From Transparency to Standards: The Role of the TBT Agreement in Addressing AI Regulatory Challenges.”

V Jean Monnet Prize for Social Sciences – Contest for Young Researchers on “The Globalisation of EU Values and Democracy”: the winners were José Rodrigo Alva Gastañadui, Patricia Vega Pacheco, and Carol Jazmin Orbegoso Moreno (Peru), with the paper titled “El régimen global de sanciones de la Unión Europea como instrumento frente a las graves violaciones de derechos humanos en América Latina: fundamentos, aplicación y comparación con el sistema interamericano de Derechos Humanos.”
The authors were awarded a trip to present their work at the X Jean Monnet BRIDGE Seminar in Chile.

Observatory of European Studies

In 2025, the European Studies Observatory stood out for publishing over 120 news pieces from a wide range of countries. The Observatory focuses on disseminating news, insights related to European legal and political events, and brief comments on European case law that generate interest for the international community.

Latin American Journal of European Studies

The ninth edition of the Journal, published in June 2025, featured 18 scientific articles authored by researchers from 12 different countries. The issue included a thematic dossier on “Human Rights, Dignity, and Equality: A Dialogue between Latin America and Europe”, articles, interview and book review.

The tenth edition of the Journal, published in December 2025, featured 18 scientific papers from 8 countries. Additionally, it included a thematic dossier on “Digital Transformation and Innovative Solutions” and a section dedicated to additional scholarly articles.

Bridge Watch Report

The Bridge Watch Report aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the fundamental values shared between Europe and Latin American countries. A second, separate report, focused on Human Rights and Digital Transformation, will be submitted to the European Commission and made publicly available in early 2026.

Initiatives Supported by the BW Project

In 2025, the BRIDGE Watch Project supported several activities in collaboration with partners from Brazil, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Portugal and Uruguay.

Ongoing Activities

For 2026, we’ve already started the year with two open opportunities:

6th Jean Monnet Prize for Social Sciences – Contest for young researchers on topics related to ‘The globalisation of EU values and democracy. Authors can submit their research papers until June 1, 2026.

Call for Papers: XI Workshop of the Jean Monnet Network – BRIDGE Watch in Lisbon, Portugal, on “Fair and Free Trade for Inclusive Economies.” Full papers can be submitted until March 2, 2026.
