Universidad de Sevilla hosts the V Jean Monnet Network Meeting of the BRIDGE Project with more than 400 participants

On April 18th and 19th, Universidad de Sevilla (Spain) hosted the V Jean Monnet Network Event of the Bridge Project. The event had as its central theme "El Derecho Internacional Privado en las Relaciones entre la Unión Europea y América Latina" and all activities were conducted in hybrid mode (face-to-face and virtually).

The BRIDGE Project (funded by the Erasmus+ Program of the European Union), in partnership with Universidad de Sevilla, carried out a series of academic activities. Starting on the morning of April 18th, the institutional partners from Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina (Brazil), Universidade de Lisboa (Portugal), Universidad de Sevilla (Spain), Università degli Studi di Milano (Italy), Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Mexico), Universidad de Buenos Aires (Argentina), Universidad del Rosario (Colombia) hosted an internal meeting to discuss the results of the project so far and the activities to be developed until the end of the year. 

During the afternoon, at Salon de Grados, the partners of the project hosted a Round of Discussions on the theme “Debates sobre el Derecho Internacional, los Procesos de Integración Regional y los Derechos Humanosâ€. The following lectures were given by the Professors:

Dr. Nuno Cunha Rodríguez (ULisboa, Portugal), “Derechos humanos y los acuerdos comerciales de la Unión Europeaâ€; Dra. Sandra Negro (UBA, Argentina), “Los derechos humanos en la agenda y en el derecho del Mercosurâ€; Dra. Joana Stelzer (UFSC, Brasil), “Due diligence en la Unión Europea y sus posibles repercusiones en Brasilâ€; Dra. Naiara Posenato (UMilan, Italia), “Notas sobre el arreglo internacional de controversias y el art. 6 CEDHâ€; Dra. Aline Beltrame de Moura (UFSC, Brasil), “El caso Robinho y el proceso de homologación de sentencias extranjeras en Brasilâ€; Dr. Manuel Becerra Ramírez (UNAM, México), “Propiedad intelectual y derechos humanosâ€; Dra. Cristiane Derani (UFSC, Brasil), “La alimentación como un derecho humano y el papel de las empresas en la cadena alimentaria con especial atención a la Unión Europea y Brasilâ€; Dr. Walter Arévalo Ramírez (URosario, Colombia), “Resistencia frente a los tribunales de derechos humanos: la evolución de la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos".

On the morning of April 19th of 2023, it was time for the seminar “El Derecho Internacional Privado en las Relaciones entre la Unión Europea y América Latina†at Salón de Grados. The Open Act counted with welcoming words from Dr. Fernando Llano Alonso (Decano Faculdad de Derecho USevilla), Dra. Aline Beltrame de Moura (Project Coordinator), and Dra. Beatriz Campuzano Diaz (Project's Institucional Partner).

During the seminar, several authorities discussed the theme of Private International Law in regard to the European Union and Latin America: Dr. Ignacio Goicoechea, Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Hague Conference on Private International Law; Dr. Pablo Antonio Fernández Sánchez, Professor of Public International Law at Universidad de Sevilla, former president of IHLADI; Dr. Francisco Fonseca Morillo, Director of Instituto Universitario de Estudios Europeos da Universidad de Valladolid, former director of the Oficina de la Comisión Europea in España; Drª Alma María Valor Mavit, Assistant Deputy of Assuntos Jurídicos Consulares, Ministerio de Asuntos Exteriores, Unión Europea y Cooperación and Drª Paula Mongé Royo, Deputy Director of International Legal Cooperation, Ministerio de Justicia.

By the afternoon of April 19th, the event hosted the V Workshop on “El Derecho Internacional Privado en las Relaciones entre la Unión Europea y América Latinaâ€, where 14 articles were presented by its authors. The articles were sent by authors from several universities located in countries such as Spain, México, Argentina, Brazil and Italy. By the end of May, the two best papers selected by the Special Committee will be awarded a prize of EUR 250 each.

More than 400 people participated in the 2 days of the event, both online and in person at Universidad de Sevilla. All of the developed activities are part of the Jean Monnet Network “Building Rights and Developing Knowledge between European Union and Latin America – BRIDGEâ€, a Project financed by the Erasmus Program + of the European Union.

The next event of the BRIDGE Project is scheduled for October 3rd and 4th, 2023, at Universitá Degli Studi di Milano, in Italy. More information will be released soon.
